Construction Engineering in Healthcare: A Growing Field with Exciting Opportunities

By: Mitch Ortiz, PE, ISI Managing Director of Facilities & Engineering

As the healthcare industry continues to expand, so does the demand for well-designed and efficient facilities. Construction engineers play a crucial role in shaping the future of healthcare infrastructure. In this article, we’ll explore recent trends, employment prospects, and the exciting opportunities awaiting construction engineers in the healthcare sector.

1. Growth in Construction Employment

Key Point: Construction employment is on the rise.

In July 2024, the construction industry added 25,000 jobs, surpassing the average monthly gain of 19,000 over the previous 12 months. This upward trend reflects the need for skilled professionals to build and maintain healthcare facilities.

2. Healthcare Sector Expansion

Key Point: The healthcare sector is experiencing significant growth.

During the same period, healthcare employment increased by 55,000 jobs. Notable gains occurred in home health care services, hospitals, and nursing and residential care facilities. This increase in healthcare jobs, coupled with an aging healthcare infrastructure in need or recapitalization – especially in the public sector at agencies like the Department of Veterans affairs – will yield a substantive construction of new healthcare facilities. Additionally, as the aging population drives demand for new types of healthcare services, construction engineers are essential for creating modern, patient-centric spaces.

3. Engineering Occupations Outlook

Key Point: Architecture and engineering occupations are projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations.

From 2022 to 2032, approximately 188,000 openings are expected each year in architecture and engineering fields, including construction engineering. This growth results from both employment expansion and the need to replace retiring workers. Construction engineers will find ample opportunities to contribute their expertise to healthcare projects.

4. Construction and Extraction Occupations

Key Point: Employment in construction and extraction occupations remains steady.

Between 2022 and 2032, about 646,100 openings are projected annually in these fields. As healthcare facilities evolve and adapt to new technologies, construction engineers will be at the forefront of creating safe, efficient, and sustainable spaces.

Conclusion

The intersection of construction engineering and healthcare promises exciting prospects. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or considering a career change, the growing demand for healthcare facilities presents a wealth of opportunities. Stay informed, network with industry experts, and be part of shaping the future of healthcare infrastructure.
